DRUG ABUSE RESISTANCE EDUCATION PROGRAM

Drugs -vs- Kids

It's a reality every parent must face--head-on. You can't deny it. You can't ignore it. But as parents or other concerned caregivers, you are your children's greatest resource. What follows is your resource on drugs in America--descriptions, photos, street names, use and links to additional information.

The D.A.R.E. Program continues to be a powerful tool within the Taylor County Schools, combating the drug and violence issues facing our youth. This program continues to teach drug and violence resistance techniques, along with the decision-making skills to meet these and other problems our youth face today. The building of self-esteem amongst our youth is a prime learning objective incorporated into the D.A.R.E. Curriculum.

Through D.A.R.E., Deputy Upshaw strives to establish a positive relationship between students and law enforcement, teachers, parents, and other community leaders.

Deputy Upshaw purpose for the program is:

  • To prevent drug abuse, gang involvement and violence among children and youth.
  • To develop personal safety knowledge and skills among children
  • To build a positive relationship between the police and the youth of our community.
  • To provide positive role models for children.
  • To equip school staff and parents with training regarding drugs, gangs and related issues.

The D.A.R.E. Officer has over 80 hours of special training to equip him with the tools he needs to teach a course in drug resistance and violence avoidance techniques.

One of the unique features of the project D.A.R.E. is the use of police officers as instructors. The D.A.R.E. Lesson focuses on 4 major areas:

  1. Providing accurate information about alcohol and drugs
  2. Teaching students decision making skills
  3. Educating them how to resist peer pressure
  4. Providing them some ideas for alternatives to drug use and violence.
