The Fire Rescue Department consists
of Station One at Perry Foley Airport which is staffed by 6 career
firefighters.
The firefighters work in three shifts
of two firefighters each.
They are on duty 24 hours and off
duty 48 hours in a three day rotation, so there are always two firefighters
on duty at any time.
Additionally, there are six volunteer
fire companies.
They are located in Shady Grove,
North District (Johnson-Stripling Rd.), West District (Woods Creek),
Taylor Beaches, Steinhatchee, Athena, Econfina, and Nutall Rise.
Each has volunteers, a firehouse,
trucks, and equipment for quick response to emergencies in their communities.

The Fire Department responded to
364 requests for service in 1999. The following is a breakdown of
the type of calls received:

Fire Rescue responds to all types
of emergencies that occur in the County including fires, vehicle accidents,
hazardous chemical incidents, medical emergencies, train incidents,
natural gas leaks, petroleum spills, persons trapped, and electrical
wires down.
Service is provided for structures
ranging from high rise buildings, industrial occupancies, places of
worship, schools, and residential housing.
Fire Rescue personnel also perform
many nontraditional duties such as assisting with Fire Code Enforcement,
Plans Review, fire safety demonstrations and training, distribution
of smoke detectors, home fire safety inspections, public education,
victim assistance, mutual aid to surrounding agencies, and monitoring
the July 4th fireworks.
